A quick stop through tiny Canyon, an unincorporated area in Contra Costa county, east of Oakland. A fascinating history involving old-time loggers, back-to-the-landers, water rights, and experimental film — Bruce Baillie lived here and screened films in his backyard (hence the name of Canyon Cinema). Driving down the one road in this narrow crevice full of redwoods, you feel closer to Eureka than San Francisco. What caught my eye, however, were chairs in a classroom at the Canyon School — a tiny K-8 public school on the opposite side of Upper San Leandro Creek. I had one of these growing up! Where is it now?
